Skills that delegates hope not to use:

I've just spent the last two days delivering skills that everyone hopes they won't use.

Why? The course was on Accident Investigation in the construction industry.

Investigations rarely fail because people don't care, they fail because they haven't been taught how to investigate.

I had the pleasure of working alongside G.M.Hardington Training Consultancy and experienced professionals from Wienerberger UK

We explored how to:

✔️ Secure the facts before the theories.

✔️ Test competing explanations.

✔️ Record facts, not assumptions.

✔️ Ask better questions to gather more information.

✔️ Keep an open mind

✔️ Gain and collate evidence objectively and fairly to put forward to decision makers.

These are skills that can be learnt and practiced on the course.

Delegates don’t just sit and listen—they investigate realistic scenarios, interview witnesses, evaluate evidence and make decisions they can justify.

If your organisation carries out workplace investigations—whether in HR, health and safety, security, retail or operations—and you’d like to improve the confidence and consistency of your investigators and raise investigative standards, I’d be happy to have a conversation.

What do you think is the most common mistake people make when investigating an incident?
